Windows Phone 7 vs Meego on the N9 (video)

Having seen Windows Phone 7 soundly defeat Symbian Belle, many old-time Nokia fans would say the real competitor to WP7 was never Symbian but Meego.

Now we have a 20 min review of the Nokia N9, likely the last Meego handset, against an HTC Radar again. Unfortunately it is all in Russian, and I have no idea what the reviewers opinion is, but what I feel is clear from the video is that Windows Phone 7 provides a clearer, more consistent experience, and once again shows Nokia made the right choice by choosing Windows Phone 7.

I might sound crazy for saying this but I actually like the look of Meego, and it actually looks more or less smooth in terms of scrolling, unlike Android, although it might still not be on the level of windows phone or iOS. It doesn’t look as good as windows phone but some of the design elements are really nice, like the multitasking screen and it has a simple interface, a little like windows phone. However I think that whole sliding apps to the side thing is a little unnatural, although that might just be because I’m used to the windows start button.

Meego is indeed a great OS and it’s too bad Nokia will abandon it.
But Windows Phone is more than an OS, it’s a whole ecosystem and I think that’s why Nokia choose it.

There is not much point providing a transcript of the video since he does not make any conclusions and does not mention many advantages or drawbacks of the OSes.

A few things that he does point out in favour of WP7 during his 20 min are that the Picture Hub lets you check your facebook and Skydrive pictures unlike Meego.

Whilst Word documents load on WP7 you can alreay scroll through them… in conjunction you can browse a document by chapters.
Excel files open well. .. granted its MS. Meego does a good job even if it is view only.

Marketplace for Meego is its biggest drawback because it does not have much to offer.

He is doing a visual comparison of the UI basics of both operating systems, the principles work, performance, available functionality – this from YouTube.

From the looks of his People Hub, he is a Maemo/Meego user; but he seems relatively adept at using WP and at least has the phone set up.  (it annoys me when I see the People hub not populated when people are doing reviews/comparisons).

Perhaps they’ll be happier next week after they see the sweetness of Nokia and Windows Phone together. :)

      WHY?

It’s all but over for wp.

Apple and Google have released/announced their next generation products and the best MS can do is the buggy Mango?

Even Elop can’t save wp now.

      Still you guys are entertaining

I just can’t wait for the OS on the right to be running on the phone on the left! NOKIA TAKE MY MONEY NOW!

The N9 really struggled opening/editing documents. WP7 is quite good for productivity it seems.

This started as a reply to MarcXW, but enndid up a bit off what i wanted to say.

I should preface this by saying, yes, i am a nokia fan, right now carrying a Nokia N8 and HTC HD2, buth running unnoficial versions of symbian (Belle not yet official for N8 and my HD2 pretends to be a HD7 to get Mango). Sadly the N9 is out of my financial reach but for the curious, you can get one to try out from NokiaConnects.com, though there may be a bit of a queue.

Both OS’s do some things very well and I for windows phone, service integration, email, the people hub are all excellent and something other platforms can learn from.

However, One place MS should work with nokia for future Windows Phone updates is the mutitasking UI (not the behind the scenes/API, though they do this well too, as I’m sure you can tell from the N9). N900, N9 and Symbian all do a better mutitasking from a user point of view (users don’t care if aps are toombstoned/running in the background or what, they want to know if an aopp is closed or open and and if it’s open they can switch to it easily). The N900 and N9 especially are fantastic and in my opinion are better than anything I have seen on any mobile OS. I could see Windows Phone looking good if you adapted the N9 mutitasking UI to a bit more “live tile-ish” in appearance with up/down scrolling, more than 6 apps in the list and the ability to close them.

There are one or two other things I’d like to see MS also learn from Nokia, but more Symbian Belle, is how to get the core UI areas to do rotation well. IN Belle the portrait homescreen layout and landscape layout are independant from eachother except for what is displayed on each homescreen. This system could translate well to the live tiles view.
Lastly, for personal and business use, it’s nice to not have to transfer documents through the cloud if the PC they are going to/from is right there in front of you (USB drag and drop/bluetooth/USB on the go, would all be nice here), nice not to have to transcode your videos or only use Zune software, nice not to turn off the wifi conection when the phone is sleeping if you are listening to a form of internet radio, and nice to be able to pick a file on the phone for a custom ringtone, oh and to easily turn various radios (such as Wifi, bluetooth, 3G, etc without having to delve for each one individually in the sessiongs menu, such as through the drop down bars in Belle and MeeGo ). These things are not hard, but are among nokia fans main criticisms of windows phone.

Don’t get me wrong, i actually like windows phone for a lot of reasons, and there are plenty of things Nokia/Symbian/IOS/Android could take from Windows phone, and when i next get a new phone on contract somehwere (once the AT&T -T-mo dust has settled) it will more than liely be a windows phone. A lot of my issues, and those of other nokia fans, comes through the loss of functionality we have enjoyed for many years, some of these even on S60 phones like the N95, incfact my Nokia 6230i had some of these things in 2004.
