Windows Phone 7–210,000 monthly Facebook users, 4,300 apps, leaving webOS behind

fbwp73

Since we last took stock of the state of Windows Phone 7 last week, the OS has massed the 4000 app milestone, adding hitting  4,292 apps, adding 446 since last week. At this rate, with about 2 weeks left in the year, the total is on track to pass 5000 by the end of the year, passing the number of apps on WebOS easily.

Monthly Facebook users have also increased steeply, as can be seen from the graph above, rising from 180,786 to 209,961, adding around 30,000 users.

Ad company Chitika also revealed the web usage of the Windows Phone 7 installed base has hit around 1% of Android’s, and 0.6% of iOS, no mean achievement for an OS less than 2 months into release, and a number which suggests around 700,000 Windows Phones sold so far.

While Windows Phone 7 can not hold a candle yet to the interest in iOS and Android, the amount of searches for WP7 has continued to rise since the announcement of the OS, surpassing the volume of webOS already, suggesting, if anything Windows phone 7 is not going to be the 5th mobile OS after all :)

This is kind of iffy, webOS is in much the same position. Sure, webOS has been out, but for all intents and purposes there hasn't been a new device in ages and, they too are basically starting from scratch even if they do have an installed base.

Apart from Android and iOS, I think it is a struggle for every other platform.

webOS, Windows Phone 7, and soon MeeGo all have an uphill battle against the incumbents. webOS really should have done better than it did, because it got an early start.

Has Microsoft finished its WP7 give-away to staff yet? Microsoft previously announced it would give one handset to all 90,000 or so employees. These phones must add to the statistics. I know that some staff managed to turn one free phone into 2 free phones, using the carriers' 2-for-1 offers. Dell was also giving around 30,000 handsets to staff. That's around 120,000 free Windows Phone 7 handsets. Possibly more, with the 2-for-1 offers.

      • OOOO

whats the uphill battle? I just went out and got a wp7 phone. i didnt want a laggy piece of shit android phone, or a lame iphone

        wheres the battle?

      • xma1e

I'm sure Google and Apple have done similar give aways to their staff too, this kind of thing is standard practise in any industry, use you own products where possible.

No… they aren't even close to all ms employees having a phone, that is going to take some time, they would need to wait till their region/country has a wp7 phone and on top of that they need their carrier to have a wp7. So.. today no one on vzn, sprint or in an unsupported country would have a new phone. Everyone seems to think 90k ms employees were handed a phone on launch day… certainly not the situation.

Actually, if you do the Google Trends search for "Windows Phone" or "Windows Phone 7", instead of just "WP7", the difference is much greater. I think this is far more meaningful… I don't think ordinary people will do a web search for wp7, but they might for Windows Phone, and the data seems to back this up. It's much more popular.

First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight and you win.

700K is a great number. At this rate the magical 1 mil mark will be hit soon.

  • zzz

Guys, if you go by the 600K-700K estimation of which I suspect ~300K is from AT&T and T-Mobile (US), I think WP7 is not bad at all. Those two carriers sold only around ~800K/month Android phones last quarter.

But WP7 needs CDMA carriers to put the adoption rate at a higher trajectory. If you take out the iphone, Verizon and Sprint combined smartphone market is probably 2x or 3x more than AT&T (which is iphone heavy) and T-Mobile combined.

European sales have been relatively low IMO but that was also true for Android in early days as well. Android took off in the US well before Europe. Maybe Europe is harder to crack due to Nokia's presence? How is WP7 marketing in Europe? Do you guys in Europe see carriers pushing WP7 phones like AT&T here?

In UK at least there are ads on TV in high profile programs all the time. Reports are still that sales are slow.

for the first few weeks of release youd have been hard pushed to know it had even been released. but now there are fairly regular ads on tv. just out of interest, when passing mobile stores i have a quick look inside & its suprising how many times ive seen a windows phone being demoed, especially in the orange shop, that may have something to do with every windows phone ad ive seen being Orange branded. but at least orange seem to be giving it a good push even if the other networks arnt.

I am seeing more than 1.1 million user in this application http://apps.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=

    Which one is correct?

  • http://twitter.com/wp7user @wp7user

I am seeing two applications in Facebook for Windows Phone. One shows 1.1 million users and other one shows 220K. First one sounds reliable than the second one.

I finally started to see vodafone ads for WP7 here in Greece, they have the HTC 7 Trophy and the LG Optimus 7, don't want either so I'm waiting for my dell. The ads kicked off 2 or 3 days ago so I guess they finally got some stock in last week.

As for apps, the Marketplace is still full of crapware or metooware, not enough key apps like SatNav. We need real apps not half the stuff in there. It's a shame everyong is concentrating on quantity and not quality.

well people also forget about HP with Palm and Webos. They are prepping for a massive launch next month. Did everyone forgot about the other 5 companys HP purchased this year (Melodeo (Acquired in June 2010)
,Fortify Software (Acquired in August 2010),Stratavia (Acquired in August 2010)
3PAR (Acquired in September 2010),ArcSight (Acquired in September 2010)
its called a eco system heard of it? Hp is set to blaze the market, and with thousands of developers ready to go with webos 2.1, They will have a tablet, and smartphones ready to go in all shape and sizes. Will be launching 2 devices every 2 months on all carriers. So its easy to speak about something (the author) you dont have much knowledge about, and though I too root for WP7, Webos is the future.

    • tom

WebOS is better than WP7, much better in fact, but there's not enough hardware choice and HP alone won't change that.

  • Lennard

well since december 17 to january 1st, they have added over 75000 who uses facebook on WP7.
