Windows Phone 8 Will Support Both ARM and Intel IA-32 Computer Architectures ??

I recently found a job post from Windows Phone team which is in line with our previous report that Windows Phone 8 (another related post) may run on Intel processors as well. The Debugger & Compiler team of Windows Phone organization at Microsoft needs experts in both ARM and Intel IA-32 computer architectures. If this happens to be true, we may see Windows Phone devices based on Intel’s smartphone chips such as Medfield.

Here is an excerpt from the job listing,

Do you like low level performance tuning? Are you interested in delivering software to other developers just like yourself? Would you like to be a better C++ developer? There are few jobs that allow you to develop a deep understanding of every corner of a programming language and its users like working on developer tools, and the Windows Phone Debugger & Compiler team is hiring for just such a position! Not only will a successful candidate get to work on the most basic tools required to build an operating system, but he or she will get to help Windows Phone become the dominant player in the handset market.

The Debugger and Compiler team is part of the Windows Phone Engineering Productivity team, which is responsible for delivering the tools and processes that improve the efficiency of our developers-both internal and external. We work closely with the Visual Studio Windows C++ team to make sure we deliver a top quality ARM compiler to Windows Phone and to all of Microsoft. We are also bringing debugging and code analysis technologies from the desktop to the phone. Members of the Debugger & Compiler team are required to be (or become) experts in both ARM and Intel IA-32 computer architectures. They have the opportunity to improve the quality of generated code and work on tools that most Windows Phone developers use every day.

That means two companies will have to make up.

Intel and Nokia, sitting in a tree, K I S…

As the Emulator currently contains a x86 Image of Windows Phone 7 this whole thing might relate to the Emulator instead of x86-phones. Wouldn’t hurt Microsoft to have support for Intels chips though (although it remains to be seen if Intel actually brought power consumption down to a level suitable for smartphones as they have failed to do so before).

    That’s for Intel’s mobile CPUs :)

As Windows Phone 8 is just Windows 8, with a tailored-to-phone ui and feature set, it obviously supports x86 out of the box, too.

Which fits nicely into the timeline of intels x86 phones release. And win8 release. Etc..

While the kernel may support it, I doubt we will see Intel phones for Apollo.  Although one day I do hope to see some awesome wintel phones.

why not? intel wants to push their phones, wp8 supports those phones. microsoft wants to please intel after going towards arm. there’s simply NO reason wp8 on intel phones shouldn’t happen asap for both companies.

As far as I can say, the sentence itself can point to implementation of debugging technics for mobile similar to desktop…. and since desktop is actually x86, there the reason about why they talk about it…
