Windows Phone defeats Android by less than a second after updated rules

After the controversial Smoked by Windows Phone uploading picture to Facebook dispute yesterday, Ben the PC Guy offered own WMPowerUser reader, Aaron (AlienSix) a rematch. Aaron accepted the offer and returned to the Microsoft CES booth.

Ben updated the rules of the contest, and declared that the finish line this time around would be when the user clicks the “Post” button. This means that the contest does not include the actual data upload, and does not include the loading screen after the user clicks the Post button.

Aaron informed us that the HTC Titan beat his Samsung Galaxy S2 by ”literally under a second.” Nevertheless, he was awarded with a HTC Arrive, so he left happy!

This was a very close victory, but Windows Phone was the clear victor at other contests like checking the weather (thanks, Live Tiles!), updating multiple social networks (Me tile FTW), and identifying the current song playing (integrated Bing Music search). Watch Microsoft’s video below to see the highlights of day one, including multiple wins for Windows Phone, and one close loss to the iPhone 4S uploading a pic to Twitter.

About Andrew Bares

As an avid gamer, I see the Windows Phone as a solid platform for mobile gaming. I will review almost every WP7 game and give you an idea if it is worth your money or not! In addition to gaming, I have been using Windows Mobile since 2005, and understand just about everything there is to know about the Windows Phone platform. Xbox Gamertag: DirtSurfer07 (add me!)

That host is a pretty cool guy, he’s not downing the people who lose, he’s just saying “hey, this is WP and it rocks, maybe you should check it out”.

      I totally agree with you!

The weather challenge was a joke. The guy said lets check the weather in –insert 2 cities–, meanwhile he already had those two cities pinned to his home screen. How is that any different from an android user adding two weather widgets to their home screen?

The Windows guy is just winning at the expense of people who have no clue what they’re doing. The guy was trying to check the weather by visiting a site he had bookmarked, I’m sure if he had a WP7 phone he would have no clue about live tiles (just like he has no clue about widgets) and he would again simply be checking the weather via a site he had bookmarked in IE.

To clarify, I’m not talking about the weather challenge in the above video. I’m talking about the one on their YouTube channel.

Well of course Microsoft picked the things Windows Phone is particuarly good at haha.

It’s pretty impressive how fast the iPhone opens applications… that’s one of the things I dislike about Windows Phone, apps load slow. The iPhone was instant.

Each phone has positives and negatives, that’s all it comes down to! I can’t stand the iPhone because it doesn’t have a back button. I can’t stand Android because the interface isn’t butter smooth. Windows Phone is the best for me, despite some of its flaws, just like the iPhone may be the best for others despite the iPhone’s flaws!

        What phone are you using?

      • http://www.visiv.ca hunter2

Yeah but the point is that there’s no difference between Windows Phone and Android if the user knows how to pin apps/add widgets. Both windows phone and Android have apps that allow you to put the weather for multiple sites on your home screen.

What I’m saying is that in many cases the windows guy is winning because people don’t know how to use their phones. The android guy who checks weather by bookmarking a weather site even though android has built in weather widgets is the same guy who’s going to use WP7 and not know how to pin tiles to the home screen.

Well we all know this is a subjective real world type event.  A bit gimmicky of course, but it does bring some awareness to the platform and gets people to take some notice. It does showcase a few areas where with all the integration that MS has put into WP how it can be much easier out of the box than other platforms in doing some common things.

good point sir, also if you have lock screen widgets then this contest is over in under a second

Who cares, the guy got a free windows phone, worth significantly more than $100, I’m sure he was glad to lose.

I thought Aliensix was already rocking a Windows Phone?

    Android? You traitor.

He reviews all different smartphones haha, he just happened to have an Android at the time

Don’t worry, he really likes Windows Phone and now he has an own device he can keep. The other ones are for testing ;)

To be fair, if he had a WP7, he would have had 0% chance of winning $100. As it turned out, even with an Android he had a 0% chance of winning :P

I was wondering how they would do that but he did ask each person what they use their phone for so it wasn’t like Ben was saying hey lets do this because you have never done this before on your phone.  besides, the selling point of the windows phone is to show that the everyday stuff we do on the phone can be done with the live tiles.  It was phone and at least will show that WP7 isn’t just about the metro design but the reason why it has that metro design.

You know what would make windows phones sell? If MS and Nokia gave em to the Kardashians and the crew from Jersey Shore. Let the Kardashians use the group feature to keep up with the family and the Jersey Shore crew to take pics and share. Believe me ! It would work!

  • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

That’s how it should be.  The user shouldn’t be concerned with the upload unless it fails.
