Windows Phone only getting IPv6 support with Apollo

According to a leaked recent Nokia presentation Windows Phone users will have to wait till Apollo before they can connect to IPv6-only networks.

In the middle of last year it had been believed Windows Phone 7 Mango will support IPv6 due some entries on Microsoft’s Mango .net documentation, but in practice on IPv6-only networks Windows Phones are not able to get IP addresses.

As can be seen from the graphic above while IPv6 support is very variable, Windows Phone has the poorest support amongst the major and not so major operating systems.

2012 is meant to be the year of the big IPv4 to IPv6 change-over and while most IP services offer IPv4 fall-back, in Asia where IPv4 addresses have already run out Windows Phone users will find themselves unable to connect to some websites due to lack of the appropriate networking support.

Chalk this up as another reason why for some Windows Phone 8 could not come fast enough.

in June this year many big companies like google, bing and facebook will change from enabling IPv4 only on their main domain names to IPv4 AND IPv6. I think it will be a VERY long time before we start to even the most casually used websites require users to support IPv6. Adding IPv6 support to Windows Phone in Q4 this year with Apollo is perfectly reasosnable as far as I can tell.

Everyone who has a windows phone now will get Apollo (as far as we know). So we should all get the support in the fall. No news here. Move along… Move along.

A very alarmist headline which makes much to do about nothing. I have a feeling it will be 2020 before lack of IP6 would seriously effect you. Even if your current phone doesn’t get the Apollo upgrade, you will be replacing it in a few years anyways.
