YoutubePlay updated to version 1.0.8

YoutubePlay, one of the first apps to give full access to the Youtube catalogue has been updated to version 1.08 following recent changes at Youtube breaking functionality.

While the UI does not compare well to applications like Kinoma Play, its does have 2 major advantages. One is that its free and the second is that it allows the direct download of Youtube videos to your smartphone, meaning you will be able to view your favourite music videos, for example, off-line or where connectivity is poor.

While Kinoma Play is a paid application, Kinoma FreePlay gives the same UI experience, provides YouTube functionality, and is indeed Free.

My experience with Kinoma Freeplay was pretty bad, due to the constant nagging to get you to buy the paid for version. It was one of the worst examples of nagware I have seen recently.

You only get upgrade recommendations if you use Kinoma Play features. Kinoma FreePlay has lots of free functionality — including all Kinoma Play YouTube features except upload — so you normally won’t see any recommendations to upgrade.

YoutubePlay really can’t compare to Kinoma Play or FreePlay. It doesn’t even let you log into your YouTube account, much less view your Favorites, Subscriptions, rate and comment on videos, etc.

Dont get me wrong, I love kinoma play ( http://wmpoweruser.com/?tag=kinoma ), but its too heavy an app with too long a start-up time to use just for youtube, and when you start using the free version for anything else you constantly run into the pay barrier.

I upgraded my WM5.0 phone to .NET 3.5 and installed this… apparently it’s not compatible with WM5.0.

The XDA forum posting doesn’t list OS compatibility, so I wasted 30 minutes getting a friendly error running the app.

Oh well. I really looked forward to being able to download youtube vidoes onto the SD card.
