Zune HD and others officially dead after all, despite denials

Despite Microsoft blaming a publishing mishap for the Zune HD page being pulled from the Zune.net site, a post on the Zune.net support site officially confirms the device has been discontinued.

The post makes it clear Microsoft “will no longer be producing Zune players” and that the focus is Windows Phone 7. The service will remain, and warranties will be honoured, but Zune HD owners now officially have a collectors item.

I guess some-one should tell Michael Yaeger …

Agreed. I’ve been really happy with my ZuneHD. Not ready to move to WP7 as a phone device until the market grows a bit, but would love to see a WP7 based media player with great battery life.

A Windows phone music player would be great in my opinion, though I think they would rather sell windows phones. In all, I think it was necessary, and they have to focus on just a few key platforms to make them really top-notch. They have done a fantastic job with WP7, and windows 7, though they might want to reconsider their naming conventions, as windows phone 7 will soon become windows phone 8, and people might get confused. Perhaps just “Windows Phone v.8″ would be a little more consistent?

Nice run. I am glad I got a Zune HD 64 when I could. Can not find them now cheep. Have not made the jump to Windows Phone 7 yet. I would like to see a WP7 type media player also. Samsung is coming out with 2 and HTC is rumored to have one coming. I’ll wait and see.
